I have a Dell display with an HDMI input and I support laptops with a myriad of digital video connectors. Two have HDMI one has DisplayPort and one still has the mini-DP connector.
My laptop recognized the new connection though I had to change the display mode to extend the desktop from the default of duplicating it.
